Brief Synopsis – A small band of Rebels must obtain the secret plans of the Empire’s new deadly weapon The Death Star before it becomes operational which would mean doom to their cause.
My Take on it – As my loyal readers are already aware, it is quite rare for me to see the same movie more than once in a short time frame, let alone twice in the theater.
Thankfully, I had the opportunity to once again be taken to a place and time, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away and was once again blown away by what they were able to achieve here.
The way that this story is created for us is great because it is just a “side” story when looking at the big picture of all that happens in the Star Wars universe, but it is an extremely important story that finally was told to us.
By doing so, they were able to expand the universe by introducing us to other key figures besides the ones we all know and love over the past 40 years.
There are numerous “kisses” with the known canon of the films and that helps establish that this really occurs in a parallel place and time.
This is a much darker film than most of the others and they deal with some of the tough and perhaps immoral decisions that characters need to make in such dark times.
On many levels, this film is a story about redemption, both personal and professional and no one escapes the ambiguity of it all.
This film takes the time during the first half to establish the characters and for us to understand what they all stand for before we get to the action packed second half which shows us what a real battle against the Empire really should be like (something, the other films never got quite right due to technological or story issues.)
This is clearly a film that deserves to be a part of the canon of Star Wars and resonates with the right feelings all the way through.
Despite having seen this film twice so far, I can’t wait t see it again soon because it is among the best of the films in the Star Wars series (so far).
Bottom Line – Excellent ‘side story’ that lives up to all the hype and fanfare of the series. Transports us quite easily back to the time and place that we all know and love. Great new characters help us get an even bigger picture of the kind of people living in such dark times and we get to see what they are all willing to do in order to achieve their personal and professional goals. Loved the small connections with the already known canon of Star Wars because it slightly touches them but even that helps establish when and where this film takes lace and the more important issue of why. Can’t wait to see this again in the coming months! High;y Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – George Lucas loved the film so much that Director Gareth Edwards posted on his Twitter “it was the most important review to me he’s kind of like God, I will take that conversation to my grave, his opinion means the world to me” (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (no change from original review)
