The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
Next month’s Genre has been chosen by Becky of Film Music Central We will be reviewing our favorite Cyberpunk Movies.
According to Wikipedia –
Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a future setting that tends to focus on society as “high tech low life” featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as information technology and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.
Great choice Becky!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Cyberpunk Movies…
Number of Times Seen – Twice (video in the 90’s and 19 Dec 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A futuristic message carrier who keeps the data stored in his head must deliver a secret message to a client in New York before his brain explodes from overload.
My Take on it – This is a film that has a great concept, but was made too early in order to show it’s full potential.
When this film was made, the Internet was in its infancy and mos people didn’t know very much about computers so what possibly seemed then like futuristic garble, it’s now comprehensible to just about anyone.
I had trouble not laughing at much of the silliness and craziness of it all.
Keeanu Reeves is silly here and just babbles along with his seemingly futuristic garble that now means so much less than before.
I’m not the biggest advocate of remakes, but I would be interested in seeing how a remake of a film like this could go now that most of the world is much more computer savvy.
Bottom Line – Great concept that just wasn’t realized as well as it potentially could have. Certain parts seem too prehistoric based on today’s modern technology and it was hard not to laugh at the craziness of it all. This is actually a film concept that I would enjoy to see re-imagined now that we all know so much more about computers and the Internet.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The unbounded spread of the Internet in the early 1990s and the consequent rapid growth of high technology culture had made cyberpunk increasingly relevant, and this was a primary motivation for Sony Pictures’s decision to fund the project in the tens of millions. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not at all. Great concept that should have been made decades later for people to better appreciate the filming and concept. Seems more like a farce that any eal
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
