Deepwater Horizon (2016)

dh“I’ll call you back, I’ll call you back. ” – Mike

Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Dec 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Retelling of the worst oil spill disaster in US history from the perspective of the men and women who were there when it happened.

My Take on it – I love watching films that re-enact historical events and try to give us more clarity as to what really occurred.

This film does just that.

Peter Berg does and amazing job as director while showing us the events as they happened.

His skillful hand behind the camera helps make this film feel so realistic and gives us more of a picture of who the men and women were that needed to deal with this disastrous situation as it happened.

Loved the way that we get to know the main characters and understand in what capacity they served on the oil rig.  At the same time, we also get to know their personalities much better and see them in action both before and during the crisis.

Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell are both great choices for the two main leads and each is able to give off the feeling of being in control as they need to command their men during the crisis.

The ultimate outcome of this disaster is still being felt today years later, but what is more important is the fact that they try here to explain why it happened also

Bottom Line – Excellent portrayal of what happened when the Oil drilling platform exploded causing more damage than anyone could imagine.  Liked the way they showed us a bit about each of the characters beforehand so we could see their responsibilities yet at the same time also see how their personalities were before and during the crisis.  Wahlberg and Russell are both great as the leads and we definitely get a commanding feeling from both of their characters the whole way through.  Berg, once again does a great job of storytelling from the director’s chair because it all feels so real.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – An oil rig was built just for this film, this rig is located in Chalmette, Louisiana where filming mostly took place. It has been coined as the largest set piece ever built. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. Great review, Rob. I really liked this movie too and agree with a lot of your points. I love the team-up of Wahlberg and Berg – the DoubleBerg. This movie worked. It was exciting and emotional. Like you said, the story and characters are excellent for the genre. There are a lot of disappointing true story disaster movies, but this one was surprisingly really good. Now I can’t wait to see Patriots Day 🙂
