Passengers (2016)

pass“You can’t get so hung up on where you’d rather be, that you forget to make the most of where you are. ” – Aurora

Number of Times Seen – 1 (31 Dec 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Two passengers on are woken up from hibernation 90 years too early and must find a way to get back to sleep.

My Take on it – This is a film I’ve been looking forward to seeing for nearly a year and the fact that many reviewers didn’t like it didn’t deter me from still wanting to see it.

First of all, I loved the story elements because despite this being a “castaway” film, it has so much heart that it makes you care so much for the characters and their situations.

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are great together and have amazing onscreen chemistry which makes things feel so much more realistic because its a story about people set in space.

Their characters are developed well and we feel that we know who they are.

I loved the uniqueness of the story and the fact that it discusses the theme of loneliness so well from numerous perspectives that you care so much for everything that is happening.

Yes, it’s Hollywood and a lot is somewhat predictable, but the elements used to get to these places make it quite enjoyable to watch.

The trailer makes this film look action-packed, but don’t be fooled by it, this is a drama about castaways in space and they did it extremely well.

The special effects are great to watch and the water in zero-gravity is amazingly done.

I’m still not convinced that this is such a bad movie like many people are claiming, it gives us some great themes to mull over long after the credits role.

Bottom Line – Surprisingly great movie. Amazing effects and a story filled with heart turns this castaway film into something unique. Not as action packed as the trailer makes you believe but done extremely well.  Pratt and Lawrence have unbelievable chemistry together that makes things seem even more real than you would expect. Highly Recommended!

  1. This film was better than anticipated. I love Jims battle with his conscience over whether to wake Aurora up. I think this is the crux of the film. I love a film that makes you think and start to make a decision yourself.
