In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 89 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 1 Dec 2016 and The 89th Annual Oscars on 26 Feb 2017.
Here is my 49th review of the 89 chosen Films…
Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Jan 2017)
Brief Synopsis – Three brothers growing up in the early days of Chicago find very different paths for their lives to take, but still remain close brothers.
My Take on it – Here is yet another film on this list that I knew absolutely nothing about beforehand.
What really hit me with this film is the way that they portray family and brotherly love; that no matter what happens, family is family.
They do a nice job of showing that Chicago has always been a corrupt city with corrupt politicians ever since its inception and that it wasn’t something that just sprouted up years later.
I’m aware that this film is completely a work of fiction, but I liked the way that they were able to incorporate some true elements in the script to help make it at least seem to be more realistic and true.
The cast is great here and Tyrone Powell, Don Ameche and of course Alice Brady (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as the mother of the three boys) all do a wonderful job here.
Bottom Line – Liked the way that the brotherly love is portrayed no matter what they would do to each other. The corruption of early Chicago definitely goes in sync with what has been historically proven ever since. Despite being a complete work of fiction, it was nice how they still incorporated some basic known facts about the history of the city and the great fire that happened in 1871. Great cast including Powell, Ameche and of course Brady as their mother. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Alice Brady won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in this film. Brady wasn’t present at the award ceremony, but a man walked up and accepted the award on her behalf. After the show, he and the Oscar were never seen again. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
