The 10th Man (2006)

Brief Synopsis – On Yom Kippur Eve, a group of 9 elderly Jewish men do all they can to try and find a tenth man so they can hold prayers on the holiest of nights.

My Take on it – This is a short film that I somehow came across a few years back and was enchanted by it because it’s story felt very familiar to me.

They do a great job keeping the tone of this film balanced between being a serious story and a comedic one.

The low-key music plays a very significant role here because it makes this story feel even longer than it really is.

They do an excellent job here of discussing the idea of how an older generation must deal with changing times when the younger generation isn’t as interested in following in their path.

This is a universal theme that can be connected to so many different situations, but they do a wonderful job showing how it can effect religious observance.

As a Jew, I loved what this film says, but I can’t be sure that people not as familiar with the rituals of Judaism and Yom Kippur will be able to relate to this film as much as I did.

This film is available on YouTube, so anyone interested who has 11 minutes to spare should check it out.

Bottom Line – Loved the tone of this film because they take a very serious situation and look at it from a semi-humorous situation.  The music used makes this film feel like a lot more is happening than really does.  Great discussion on what happens when an older generation begins to thin out and needs to both rely on and cater to a younger crowd.  Not sure how much one who isn’t familiar with the rituals of Judaism will be able to relate, but I for one loved the finished product.
