Blind Date (1987)

blind-date“I just have this chemical imbalance almost like an allergy to alcohol. It just makes me crazy!” – Nadia

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 Times (Cable in the 80’s and 4 Jan 2017)

Brief Synopsis – An up and coming executive must find a date for an important meeting, unfortunately, the women he chooses ends up making a mess of his life.

My Take on it –  We all know what kind of superstar actor Bruce Willis became after his hit Die Hard in 1988, but what kind of movie career did he have beforehand?

The truth is, before his stint as John McClane, he wasn’t in many movies, but this film was his film debut.

I would never mistake Willis for a rom-com leading man and this film proves that theory because he feels so out of place here it’s actually laughable.

I recalled this film being funnier and despite Willis being able to play a straight-laced young executive, whne things get out of control, he seems lost.

Part of the premise shows how different Willis and co-star Kim Bassinger are and it shows because they have little to no chemistry together which helps in some scenes, but not in all of them because when we are meant to take them seriously, we can’t.

This film has a great supporting cast, but even the likes of John Larroquette, William Daniels and Phil Hartman can’t help make this film more fun.

The plot is a mess and thinks that might have been funny in the 80’s, just don’t age well enough here and leaves us with a lackluster film with two up and coming actors before they really showed their acting prowess.

Bottom Line -Not as funny as I recalled, but still shows Willis’ range… sorta.  Basinger and Willis have no real chemistry, but that helps make this film work.  Great supporting cast doesn’t help make this any better tho.  In the end, it’s just a below average rom-com of a mess from the 80’s.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – David Bedford’s office window looks out onto the unfinished Fox building, which was soon to star as “Nakatomi Plaza” in Die Hard (1988). The structure still lacks windows and stone facade on the upper stories and at ground level. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
