89 Days of Oscar Nominees – #60 – The Robe (1953)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 89 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 1 Dec 2016 and The 89th Annual Oscars on 26 Feb 2017.

Here is my 60th review of the 89 chosen Films…

robe“Why must men doubt? Tell them they must keep faith! They must keep faith!” – Judas

Number of Times Seen – 1 (29 Jan 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A Roman officer is sent to Jerusalem as a punishment for his treatment of the son of the Emperor and feels the guilt over the crucifixion of a Jewish holy man.

My Take on it – Here is yet another film that I had never heard of before coming across it on the list of Best Picture nominees.

This was one of the first (of many) epic films made in the 50’s and 60’s that dealt with the crucifixion of Christ and of its effect on different people who were around at that time.

This version of the story isn’t as groundbreaking as one would hope for it to be but it’s possible that back them, it was seen as so because it was a relatively new genre.

The story moves along quite slowly and isn’t very thrilling as one would hope.

Thankfully, the message of the film is quite clear and resonates throughout, so it isn’t a complete loss.

The cast is pretty good and Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, Victor Mature and Micjhael Rennie are all ok here.

Bottom Line – One of the first (of many) films dealing with the crucifixion of Jesus and its repercussions on the Romans who were affected by it.  The story doesn’t feel as groundbreaking now as it probably was then. Isn’t as thrilling as it probably could be but the message of the film is still quite clear. Burton, Simmons, mature and Rennie are all good here, but none of them really stand out.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – There was speculation that remarks Richard Burton made about Hollywood blacklisting while filming this movie may be the reason why he never won an Oscar, despite being nominated seven times. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
