“The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.” – Sgt. Slaughter
Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Jan 2017)
Brief Synopsis – The elite special forces unit G.I. Joe must try to stop the terrorist organization of COBRA after they band together with a subterranean group of criminals.
My Take on it – For as long as I can recall, I have been a huge fan of G.I. Joe; I collected all of the comics as a kid, had many of the action figures and watched every episode of the cartoon.
The one thing that I for some unknown reason never did was watch the movie that they made that was released in the theater (not for long, if I recall correctly).
I have now finally rectified that issue and I must say that I’m glad that it took so long to see this because it’s really really bad.
They changed the whole format and structure of the show and created an enemy that lives underground and have been transformed from snakes or something instead of keeping the story grounded with soldiers vs. terrorists.
Because I’m quite prolific with the G.I. Joe universe, I was quite familiar with all the “human” characters and was also pleasantly surprised the see a bunch of new characters never used before in the cartoon to be introduced here.
Unfortunately tho, this entire movie is a mess and I for one think that it ruins in some ways the fact that the cartoon and comics kept us within the realm of possibility due to it not relying on supernatural beings and just using soldiers for both sides.
Bottom Line – Glad I never saw this one beforehand. This film was terrible because it changed the whole format of the way the Joes were portrayed in both the comics and TV show. I knew most of the characters from my previous encounters with G.I. Joe, so it was fun seeing some of the new ones joining in, but overall, this was a huge disappointment. 😦
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film’s opening sequence with the G.I. Joe soldiers saving the Statue of Liberty from the Cobra invaders was originally intended to be the climax in the earlier drafts. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy
