A Monster Calls (2016)

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Jan 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A young boy who’s mother is dying of cancer is visited by a tree creature who wishes to tell him three inspirational tales in return for a story of the boys latest nightmare.

My Take on it – This film has a really clever premise and it really works well throughout the whole film.

I originally thought this was gonna be a horror movie and pushed off seeing it a few times til I could view it in daylight. 🙂

It actually reminded me a lot of Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) in many ways and is almost as good.

I really loved the way that they used animation in order to help differentiate between the ongoing narrative and the stories being told by the creature.

Liam Neeson does an amazing job as the voice of the creature and his presence alone adds so much more to the thrilling entertainment of this film.

They do a great job of slightly touching on so many different themes and messages, but ultimately leave us to ponder and digest them by ourselves after the credit have rolled.

The idea to mix together themes of loss and love with a menacing creature works extremely well here in order to give us something that is quite unique in it’s presentation.

Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones are both quite good here but the acting of young Lewis MacDougall is what clinches this film.

Bottom Line – Very clever premise that works quite well the whole way through. Loved the use of animation to differentiate between the ongoing narrative and the three stories told by the creature.  Neeson is amazing as the voice of the creature and his presence alone helps raise the level of entertainment.  Loved the way that this film slightly touched upon some great messages but left most of it all for us to try and figure out ourselves.  Very reminiscent of Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The novel was originally started by Siobhan Dowd. Though it was unfinished because of her untimely death, Patrick Ness finished the book with credits to her idea. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
