89 Days of Oscar Nominees – #62 -Moulin Rouge (1952)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 89 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 1 Dec 2016 and The 89th Annual Oscars on 26 Feb 2017.

Here is my 62nd review of the 89 chosen Films…

moulin-rouge“Marriage is like a dull meal with the dessert at the beginning. I have it on the very highest authority. ” – Henri

Number of Times Seen – 1 (30 Jan 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Fictional biopic of French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

My Take on it – I was shocked to learn that there was another film with this film’s title that was nominated for Best Picture besides the one from 2001.

Both films have nothing to do with one another besides the title tho.

They do a nice job here dealing with the aspect of what can possible happen to someone of they don’t have proper support from those around them when they suffer from some kind of physical ailment.

Jose Ferrer is quite impressive here and it’s amazing how he was able to play a character so much shorter than him (he actually shot many scenes on his knees).

The problem here is the story which moves along extremely slowly and isn’t as interesting as one could hope.

Unfortunately, it isn’t able to pick up any kind of momentum along the way.

Bottom Line – Does a nice job depicted how physical ailments can affect the way people think of themselves when they don’t get encouragement from those around them.  Ferrer does a pretty impressive job playing a character so short (especially due to his tall statue). The story moves along quite slowly and doesn’t pick up much momentum along the way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This film and Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! (2001) won the same Academy Awards: Art Direction and Costume Design. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
