“They really should put the warnings before this stuff. ” – Dr. Stephen Strange
Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Jan 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A gifted yet egocentric neurosurgeon seeks out a way to heal his hands after a near death car accident and comes across a sect in the Far East that uses mystical powers.
My Take on it – Being that I wasn’t really the biggest fan of Marvel superheroes as a kid, I actually didn’t know much about this character before seeing this film.
That is both a benefit and drawback for me because I was able to absorb it all as original, yet wasn’t at all familiar with the characters, events or even artifacts important to the storyline.
Benedict Cumberbatch was a great choice for this character because he feels right for the part.
Loved how this film is truly a stand alone film in the Marvel universe.
It still leaves things open for joining the other films in the series but still gives us enough focus for us to understand and learn about the characters and events depicted here.
Loved how they were able to modernize much of the story using recently known science.
The action scenes are fun to watch and they are superbly enhanced by the special effects.
Can’t wait to see where they plan to take these characters and events and how they integrate them into the overall Marvel universe.
Bottom Line – Cumberbatch is great in this role. Really liked the way that they explain the character’s origin here because it gives us insight into how they modernized the storyline updating it by using recent science. Great action scenes that are enhanced by cool special effects. The story itself is stand alone in the Marvel universe but it definitely leaves things open for future collaborations. REcommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – There is a disclaimer at the end of the closing credits warning viewers about the dangers of distracted driving. This is a reference to Strange’s catastrophic car accident (which was caused by him looking at an electronic device while driving), but (as entertainment writer Bill Bradley pointed out in a piece for the Huffington Post) it is also a continuation of the joke that repeats several times throughout the movie about essential warnings appearing after (not before) instructions. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
