“You know what I like best about amnesia? After seven years of marriage, I get to fall in love with you all over again.” – Dan Merrick
Number of Times Seen – 2 (Video in the 90’s and 5 Feb 2017)
Brief Synopsis – After suffering a tragic car accident that causes amnesia, a man tries to put the pieces of his life back together.
My Take on it – I saw this film more than 20 years ago, and the main premise of this film has remained ingrained in my head ever since whenever I think of this film or even its stars.
I was actually a bit concerned that knowing the ending would ruin my experience rewatching it, but I truly felt that I was able to enjoy it on a different level due to this foreknowledge.
The concept is great and as long as you are able to forgive a few plot points that make little sense, it really works well.
The cast is great with Tom Berenger, Gretta Scacchi, Corbin Bernsen, Joanne Whalley and Bob Hoskins all doing nice jobs here.
Besides being a straight thriller, this film tries to deal with some great issues along the way; love, memories, friendship and how one is affected after a traumatic event.
Director Wolfgang Petersen does a fine job here.
It isn’t a perfect thriller, but we get a solid premise with a good noir story that works as long as you are willing to stretch your imagination and forgive a few issues here and there.
Bottom Line – Such a great concept that works so well if you take it all at face value. Berenger, Hopkins, Bernsen, Whalley and Sacchi are all great here. Loved the way that this film tries to deal with the issues of love, memories, friednship and trying to remember things after a traumatic event due to the effects of amnesia. Yes, there are a few issues here that you need to stretch the imagination to believe, but all in all, it’s a solid premise even if you know the eventual outcome. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was made and released about twenty-two years after its source novel “The Plastic Nightmare” by Richard Neely had been first published in 1969. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
