4.1 Miles (2016)

4-1“The world needs to know what is happening here! We cant be going through this alone.” – Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Feb 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A look at the member of the gReek Coast Guard who daily must partake in rescue missions of refugees fleeing from war torn areas

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I only came across because of the fact that it was recently nominated for an Oscar for Documentary, Short Subject.

They do a great job showing us the hectic lives of these modern day heroes who must go out every day and rescue thousands of refugees flocking to their shores despite the dangers to both the rescuers and the refugees themselves.

We get a nice picture of how the system works and also the problems that these islanders face on a daily basis due to the influx of refugees to their small island.

Even with all of these issues, they continue to persevere and keep helping despite the obvious financial and personal toll that this way of life has on them, on their families and on their community.

Bottom Line – Moving documentary about modern day heroes that despite the dangers to themselves must constantly venture into the rough seas in order to save thousands of lives.  Gives an interesting perspective on how the whole system works and the hectic lives being led by these heroes who keep persevering despite the obvious financial and personal obstacles that they are faced with daily.  Recommended!
