The Lobster (2016)

the_lobster“I’m sorry, I’ve got blood on your shirt. But don’t worry, there are many ways to remove bloodstains from clothing. One way is to rinse the clothes with cold water then rub with sea salt. Another way is to scrub the stains with cotton wool dipped in ammonia. The third way is to mix flour and water into a paste, like toothpaste, especially if the clothes are delicate or brightly coloured. But just never use warm water on blood, ever. ” – Nosebleed Woman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Feb 2017)

Brief Synopsis – In an world where people cannot remain single, a man who’s wife recently left him must find a new partner within 45 days or he will be transformed into an animal of his choice.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a long time ago and I heard so much praise for the uniqueness of the whole premise.

The story actually didn’t appeal to me very much, but since it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, I felt compelled to finally watch it in order to watch as many of the nominated films as possible.

Unfortunately, I was right about the fact that this is the kind of premise that didn’t really speak to me because it is filled too much with philosophy and allegory instead of trying to tell us a straight story.

Yes, I understood that it’s a dark comedic look at how society sees relationships, yet I had so much trouble keeping interest in (or even caring about) everything that was happening.

The story moves along quite slowly and then loses whatever momentum it had about half way through which turned me off even more.

I cannot deny that it’s a very unusual and unique premise for a film, but it just wasn’t captivating enough for me to care about it at all.

Bottom Line – Not the kind of film that usually speaks to me because it’s more philosophy and allegory instead of a straight story.  There is no question that the premise is unique, but still a bit too strange.  Moves along a bit slowly and feels like it loses whatever momentum it had about half way through.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Colin Farrell gained 40 pounds for his role. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. This movie has been on and off (more off) my To Watch list…somehow it just never appealed enough, based on the trailer, for me to actually watch it. Having read your review (and having gotten to know your likes/dislikes a bit by now) I think I’m leaving it “Off” for a while longer…
