Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Feb 2017)
Brief Synopsis – After a woman is raped, she decides to find her attacker on her own instead of going to the police.
My Take on it – This is a film that I have avoided watching for quite some time mainly due to my lack of enthusiasm for foreign language films.
Since I’m trying to watch as many Oscar nominated films before the show come Sunday night, I decided to give it a try.
This is much darker than the kind of films that I usually enjoy, but they do give us a close look at how some people need to rely mostly on themselves and their instincts instead of the police.
The cast is great here but Isabelle Huppert is brave and amazing in the lead role. Not many actresses would probably be willing to take on this kind of role and she has been able to create an anti-hero that is developed extremely well.
The problem here is that it starts off quite well, but goes into territory that gets extremely dark and things begin to slightly unravel from there.
The issues discussed here will bring forth so much debate because they remain with you, even long after the credits begin to role.
Bottom Line – Interesting film that gets to be a bit too much as things move along. Huppert is amazing (and brave) in the lead role. Brings up many questions that remain with you after it’s all over. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When the film was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in a Foreign Language, it was already clear that it would not be eligible for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; even though the Oscar nominations had not been announced yet, ‘Elle’ had failed to make the shortlist of nine films for that category. Paul Verhoeven later said that this fact may have helped the film to win the Golden Globe. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
