Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Feb 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A young boy comes of age during the late 1970’s while surrounded by three very dominant women.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard so many great things about and was quite excited to finally get to see it.
The cast is great and we really get sucked into the world of the late 1970’s.
The premise mostly works and they use some great storytelling methods to relate the whole tale to us.
Parts of the movie move a bit too slowly, but overall, it works.
The thing I loved the most about this movie is the way that they use the narration to travel around the lives of these characters to give us a clearer sense of who they all are, were and of course will be.
The dialogue is great and we get some really sage advise from characters about life, relationships and everything in between.
Bottom Line – Interesting premise that uses some great methods to tell the story, but it all moves a bit too slowly. Great cast helps this film seem more realistic but it still is missing something. Loved the way they used narration to jump around the lives of the characters to give us a fuller picture of their lives. Great dialogue makes this very enjoyable. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film is semi-autobiographical, according to Mike Mills. The main cast members are based on one or multiple influences upon Mills from his childhood. Bening, in particular, is based partly on his mother, but with the emphasis on Bening’s particular spin on her character. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
