The Young Doctors (1961)

the_young_doctors_filmposter“You often hear people ask what does a pathologist do? Never hear anyone ask what surgeons do. Perhaps we all know what surgeons do. Well, a pathologist is the one who examines the surgeon’s mistakes when it’s too late. He’s the doctor the patient seldom sees, doesn’t want to. Yet, few departments in the hospital have more effect in the patient’s welfare. It is pathology which advises the patient’s physician on disease. Sometimes when all else fails, it is the pathologist who makes the final diagnosis. ” – Dr. Pearson

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis – The life of doctors in a Hospital as they try to save the lives of some of the people closest to them.

My Take on it – This is a film that I somehow came across mainly because of the great cast listed for it.

I have always been a fan of FRederic March’s work and decided to check this movie out.

They really do a great job here because they take a theme with such a large scope and are able to give us a focused story that deals with how Doctors sometimes play God when dealing with patients, but how do they act when they actually know the patient (or their family) very well.

Besides March, the cats is superb with Dick Clark, Eddie Albert and Ben Gazzara all also playing doctors in the same hospital are different stages of their careers.

There is no doubt in my mind that this film helped usher in the influx of TV shows that deal with the daily trials and tribulations of the medical staff at a hospital because of the way this kind of film shows the vast potential (and curiosity) of these kind of subjects.

Bottom Line – Does a great job taking such a large scoped story and focusing on a few important cases that involve playing God with people they actually know.  Excellent cast led by March, Albert, Gazzera and Clark.  No doubt that this helped create so many of the TV shows about the medical profession because it shows how much potential themes like this have. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The taxi first shown hurrying Dick Clark and his pregnant wife to the hospital is a 1959 model Ford. The taxi they arrive in a 1960 Ford, a distinctly different looking model. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
