Movies From the Hat V #6 – Kieron’s Pick – Judge Dredd (1995)

This is my 2955th Review

Thanks to Kieron of What About the Twinkie? for this recommendation.

[after killing the entire council] “Now who says politics is boring… ” – Rico

Number of Times Seen – At least 3 times (Theater in ’95, cable and 16 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis – In a futuristic society where the police are judge, jury and executioner, a cop known for his honesty and work ethic is accused of murdering a reporter and his wife.

My Take on it – This is a film that was part of the slew of action films starring Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 80’s and 90’s that give us an action anti-hero that we can all root for.

It works well within this kind of class of films but something still feels missing the whole way through.

The story here isn’t handled very well and it actually feels very unoriginal mainly because it seems so similar to Stallone’s previous movie, Demolition Man (1993)

It also comes off too comedic and since the dystopian world featured in the Dredd universe is brutal, graphic and quite violent, the comic aspects take away from the seriousness of trying to control such a futuristic society.

That being said, the sidekick character played by Rob Schneider is hilarious and for me, he makes the movie worth watching despite it being very average otherwise.

The reboot of this idea in 2012, Dredd (2012) takes the story to much more familiar places and works much better than this one does overall.

Bottom Line – Typical Stallone film of the 90’s.  Works within the class of films that Sly and his action counterparts churned out in the 80’s and 90’s.  The story isn’t so great because it comes off more as a comic portrayal of the dystopian world instead of a brutal and graphic one like it should.  That being said, Schneider is hilarious here.  Overall tho, the reboot in 2012 was much better.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The scene in which Fergie mocks Dredd was improvised, and it turned out to be so funny to see Rob Schneider making fun of Sylvester Stallone, that it was kept in the movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
