Movies From the Hat V #30 – Emily’s Pick – Easy A (2010)

This is my 2979th Review

Thanks to Emily of The Flapper Dame for this recommendation.

“Whatever happened to chivalry? Does it only exist in 80’s movies? I want John Cusack holding a boombox outside my window. I wanna ride off on a lawnmower with Patrick Dempsey. I want Jake from Sixteen Candles waiting outside the church for me. I want Judd Nelson thrusting his fist into the air because he knows he got me. Just once I want my life to be like an 80’s movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life. ” – Olive

Number of Times Seen – 2 (16 Jan 2011 and 22 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A high school senior realizes how far one little lie can go as she tries to climb the social ladder.

My Take on it – Being a fan of 80’s teen flicks, I was easily drawn in to this film.

Emma Stone oes a wonderful job as the normal girl who discovers a way to quickly climb the social ladder and learns to constantly go with the flow.

Her character is extremely likable and it doesn’t matter what she says or does, we keep liking her despite it all.

This film shows the power of rumors and how easily things can get blown out of proposition when moving from ear to ear; it was like a fun game of ‘telephone’.

Also shows that people can sometimes be extremely gullible and will be willing to believe just about anything no matter how crazy, insane or implausible it may originally seem.

They do a great job making constant references to some of the best 80’s flicks especially some of the ones by the legendary John Hughes.

I enjoyed this even more this time around then I did the first time.

Bottom Line – Stone is great here,  Her character is quite likable and we easily want her to succeed even as we see what all of her lies end up doing for her and others.  Shows the power of rumors and how easily people can believe what they hear no matter how absurd or implausible it may actually be.  Loved how this film references some of the best of 80’s teen flicks especially those by John Hughes. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – All the webcam and narration scenes were shot in one day. Emma Stone had a 14-hour day of simply staring at a camera doing every single webcam and narration for the entire movie and every so often she would have to walk around outside to stretch her muscles from sitting so long. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  2. Definitely going to watch this now – had avoided it til now because of Emma Stone but the 80s angle is totally sold on me xx Starter for 10 is another great one for 80s references – such as James McAvoy based his look on Andrew McCarthy xx
