Movies From the Hat V #37 – Jacob’s Pick – Bull Durham (1988)

This is my 2986th Review

Thanks to Jacob of Panned Reviews for this recommendation.

Here are his thoughts on the film.

“You just got lesson number one: don’t think; it can only hurt the ball club. ” – Crash

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s, video, DVD and 26 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis –An aging minor league catcher is hired to help tame a wild young pitcher while both men vie for the affections of a local woman.

My Take on it – This is such a great film because it does a wonderful job portraying the life of professional baseball players as they are trying to make it into the major leagues.

The fact that this film was written and directed by a former player himself makes it even more realistic because he is so familiar with the kind of life that these men live.

The cats is superb with Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins all giving us amazing performances.

They get the balance between comedy and drama really well and it helps keep things interesting the whole way through.

This is such a fun film to watch and it is definitely among the list of the best sports films ever made.

Bottom Line – Does a wonderful job portraying the life of professional baseball players who are trying to make it into the big leagues. Cast is superb with Costner, Sarandon and Robbins giving amazing performances. The fact that this film is written and directed by a former ballplayer makes it feel even more realistic. Has a great balance showing both the seriousness and comedic parts of life. Definitely among the best sports films ever made. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When the bat boy tells Crash Davis “Get a hit, Crash”, Kevin Costner ad-libbed the response of “Shut up.” Since the kid actor playing the bat boy obviously didn’t know this response was coming, he started crying. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
