Movies From the Hat V #45 – Brad’s Pick – Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001)

This is my 2994th Review

Thanks to Bradley for this recommendation. (also thanks to SG for also suggesting the same title)

“Damn it! Morons don’t learn until they die! ” – Faye

Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A team of bounty hunters on Mars must try to track down a terrorist who has been releasing toxic bombs all over the place, killing lots of people.

My Take on it – As many of you probably already know, I’m not at all a fan of Anime movies despite loving Disney and Pixar films.

The look of the anime animation has always bothered me and that hasn’t changed even though I have now seen more films of the genre.

Both of my good friends Brad and SG has been trying to get me to watch more and surprisingly, they both chose this film for this series.

I gave SG a chance to pick something else for me instead.

This was the first Anime film that I’ve seen that is a sci-fi story and that was quite appealing to me.

The story worked well as a mystery and it flowed quite smoothly the whole way through.

Since I had never seen the TV show this film is based on, I was a bit concerned that I’d fail to understand a lot of what happens, but the characters and situations are all explained quite well and we easily get a clear picture of who they each are and what they are attempting to accomplish with their job as bounty-hunters.

The action here is non-stop and it helps move the plot along at a fine pace keeping things enjoyable the entire time.

Bottom Line – An extremely interesting anime because of the sci-fi aspects of it all. Liked the way the story flowed and despite not being familiar with the TV series this is based on, I got a clear idea of who each character was and what they want to accomplish.  The action is pretty much non-stop and I enjoyed the way the plot evolved. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the scene where the vintage airplanes are spreading the vaccine over the city, one of the old coots says (in the English subtitles) “This reminds me of the sinking of the Bismarck!” The airplane he’s in is a Fairey Swordfish (a WWII-vintage biplane torpedo bomber), and Swordfishes were instrumental in sinking the Bismarck during the famous WWII naval battle. The red space ship Spike flies in the movie and the series is also called Swordfish II. (From IMDB)

Rating –  Globe Worthy

  1. Yes! Give anime a chance. 😉

Nowadays, stuff like Cowboy Bebop can be done one film (Firefly, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc), but at the time anime was the only way to watch top-notch sci-fi. I’m glad you enjoyed this one. It’s definitely a cult classic worthy of praise from your community. I hope you give some others a chance.

Ghost in the Shell (thinking of something that could only be done with animation decades ago) is a fantastic feature (and the new remake looks to directly adapt some sequences down to the compositions). It was my introduction to anime, based on a glowing review from Roger Ebert. As most times, he was absolutely right. Huge thumbs up.

Next, if you’re in the mood, check out one of my fav films of last year: YOUR NAME. It has some scifi but is more focused on character. Emotional, funny, mysterious, and time travelling scifi cool.

I also agree with Renxkyoko’s comment too. Check out Miyazaki!!! Graveyard is a straight up drama, Princess Mononoke is fantasy (my fave Studio Ghibli flick), and Spirited Away is like Pixar (full of imagination with a fantastic message).

I love that your wide horizons are expanding even further. While these are foreign flicks, anime usually has some great dubs 😉

I can’t wait to read some more anime reviews.
