This is my 2999th Review
Thanks to Jason of Jason’s Movie Blog for this recommendation.
Number of Times Seen – 2 (28 Apr 2006 and 29 Mar 2017)
Brief Synopsis – In a futuristic society, survivors of a cataclysmic catastrophe living in a closed community dream of being able to win the lottery and be transported to paradise.
My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been meaning to rewatch for quite some time, and thankfully Jason gave me that opportunity earlier than I would have expected.
This film is action packed wall to wall and its apt use of the sci-fi elements involved in the storyline work so well.
Ewan MaGregor and Scarlett Johannson are great as the two leads.
Their chemistry together is quite good and it helps make things seem a bit more realistic.
The scientific ideas used here are a bit more closer to being realistic now than they were 12 years ago and that helps make the premise seem even more plausible when watching it today.
This film raises so many questions from an intellectual, ethical and scientific aspects.
Since this is a Michael Bay film, be prepared for lots and lots of explosions and action sequences.
Bottom Line – Action packed film that deftly uses its sci-fi premise to keep things so interesting. MacGregor and Johansson have amazing chemistry together and it helps keep this film from feeling too crazy. The ideas behind the science here is much closer to reality now than it was when this was made 12 years ago and it raises so many important intellectual, ethical and scientific questions. Michael Bay goes all out here with the action, and it’s very thrilling to watch. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the scene where the jet bike crashes through the office building, an extra is pushed by the oncoming bike into a glass window. This was completely unscripted; the extra was not a stuntman and couldn’t clear the bike’s path fast enough. Fortunately, the special effects crew managed to detonate the explosives to shatter the glass a few seconds early, which, according to Michael Bay, may have saved his life. Miraculously, the man sustained no serious injuries. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
