Death Mills (1945)

“This film will not be shown to the general public without permission of the War Department” – Message placed at both the beginning and end of film

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Apr 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that was made to help American propaganda against Germany towards the end of World War Two by showing the horrific atrocities that the Germans committed against the Jews.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard about before recently seeing the documentary Night Will Fall (2014) that discusses the footage shot by the Allied forces as they liberated Nazi Concentration Camps at the end of World War Two.

Due to the fact that the British politicians were debating how and why to present such a graphic film, the America forces decided to hire famed director Billy Wilder to make a short documentary that could be used by the Allies as propaganda against to help win over Europeans that weren’t truly aware of everything that had happened to the Jews in Concentration Camps during the War.

This film is slightly hampered by the fact that its main purpose is propaganda and therefore the images shown all have an agenda, but that being said, the footage shot is so amazing and shocking because you know it’s all real.

I was a bit surprised myself due to standards of the time how graphic this film rightfully is and I knowing that it is all very real makes an even larger impact.

It’s so amazing that such a film was made at that time which helps everyone who sees this film become a part of living history as a witness to the atrocities committed during World War Two and is such an important thing to have been captured on film.

The fact that I understand the how and why this film was made due to see Night Will Fall (2014) gives it all an even greater impact.

Bottom Line – Great film that is slightly hampered by the fact that it was made with the sole purpose of trying to get Europeans to believe what really happened.  The pictures are quite graphic and not necessarily easy to watch yet they are so very important to have been filmed. Knowing the background of how and why this film was made gives even more gravity to the film.  Highly Recommended!

  1. Racial horrors that man has done to his fellow man should not be censored or covered up. He who doesn’t study history is doomed to repeat it. This sounds like the graphic stuff serves to remind us how hate can spread. We need more reminders of that in our world.
