Number of movies seen from this year – 32
Number of movies reviewed – 39 (including 7 Encore Reviews)
Once again, here’s a year where for me, the #1 film was a no-brainer. It is filled with a great story, amazing cast and finally, a movie with a message that is always forgotten too soon.
Obviously, this is a year where I need to expand my film repertoire, but the one’s I have seen are some amazing films…

Love the Top 10, Rob! I need to see a lot of movies from the 60s too. Thanks for helping me assemble my must-watch list. I’ve been meaning to see Judgement at Nuremberg. Thanks for the reminder.

Again, making a Top 10 list having seen only a dozen movies from this year is sort of a fool’s errand. If the gene pool from which you choose is so limited, making the list at all seems to be a minor waste of time. I realize that we’re going back 55 years – but 1961 was a fairly impressive year for films. You have a handful of good ones on your Top 10 – but The Hustler – which was a brilliant Paul Newman anti-hero movie (in his series of films with an H title – Hud, Hombre etc) – has no business being in last place. Behind the Young Doctors and The Absent Minded Professor? In what movie universe would that happen? My point is – this is a rather empty exercise unless and until you’ve seen a whole lot more movies from this (or any) given year. Why bother? Just from 1961 alone – you haven’t seen “One, Two, Three” – one of Billy Wilder’s last movies – with a crazed performance by James Cagney. Splendor in the Grass by Elia Kazan with Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty. Pocketful of Miracles with Bette Davis, Ann Margret and Peter Falk. Flower Drum Song, La Dolce Vita, One Eyed Jacks – a western directed by and starring Marlon Brando with Karl Malden, El Cid – a superb epic with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren (as gorgeous as she’s ever been in any movie), Town Without Pity w/ Kirk Douglas. And those are off the top of my head. I know that your temporal Top Ten is fun and a great idea – but I would caution that it’s better to skip years with such a limited array of choices and wait until you’ve had time to add names to your list before you going making Top 10s. I’d suggest seeing a minimum of 25 films in any given year.
