“Do I ice her? Do I marry her? ” – Charley

Number of Times Seen – at least five times (Cable in the 80’s, 14 May 2006 and 22 Apr 2017)

Brief Synopsis –A hitman galls in love with a woman who he meets at a wedding, not knowing who she really is.

My Take on it – This is a film that actually grows on you.

I think I appreciated this film the most upon this recent rewatch because of the way that Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner played the roles of the two lead characters.

This film is unlike most of the popular and well-known gangster movies that we all know and love because it looks at it all from a very dark and humorous perspective.

The story flows really well as it moves along and despite the fact that most of the characters are far from intelligent, it’s still fun to watch them.

Most of us are use to seeing intelligent gangsters quietly going about their mobster business slowly ‘whacking’ the competition, but this film takes those kind of issues from a completely different view than we usually see.

The way that the family dynamics are presented here is quite interesting and it gives us a very unique perspective on the way it all works.

Besides the main cast, the supporting players are also fun to watch because they all keep doing quite unexpected things.

Anjelica Huston (who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this role) and John Randolph both stand out in key roles.

Bottom Line – Nicholson and Turner are great here in the dark comedy about the mob. The story flows well and despite the characters not being as intelligent as those in most gangster films, it’s still lots of fun watching them.  Interesting look at the dynamics of a mobster family gives us so much perspective on how things work. Supporting cast helps make this work even better especially Huston and Randolph in key roles.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – John Huston’s Best Director Academy Award nomination for this film made him the oldest ever to be Oscar nominated for directing. Huston was 79 and the record still stands.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
