Mickey Mouse Monopoly (2002)

“I think that one of the things that’s so interesting about Disney as compared to other corporations is that Disney has made a spectacle of innocence, I mean it hides behind innocence in a way that allows it to separate corporate culture from corporate power and it has a kind of romance about it that allows us in some way to treat Disney as the ultimate form of fantasy, a fantasy that never needs to be questioned.” – Dr. Henry Giroux

Brief Synopsis – A look at how the Disney Corporation uses its films in ways most people can’t imagine

My Take on it – It’s not a new idea that there are people who truly believe that the Disney corporation is racist, sexist and xenophobic and this film tries to hard to make a case for it all being true.

I laughed at much of this film because they present so many ideas that are excessive and one-sided which hampers the way one can believe the information presented.

They try to give a diverse group of interviewees in order to try and prove how global and universal their thesis is, but instead it comes across as being too angry and antagonistic which makes it lose most of its credibility.

The fact that so much of this film feels vindictive really takes away from being able to take any of it seriously.

I’m sure there is some slight merit in some of what they say here, but due to its presentation, it’s truly hard to decide what merit there truly is on any level.

Bottom Line – Can’t say I agree with most of the ideas presented here because it feels a bit too one-sided.  The many different type of people interviewed tries to show things from a wider perspective but in reality turns its message into more of an antagonistic one than it really should have.  The anger from the interviewees is excessive and they don’t try to show any counter arguments to their thesis.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Mickey Mouse Monopoly will provoke audiences to confront comfortable assumptions about an American institution that is virtually synonymous with childhood pleasure. (From IMDB)
