Gold (2016)

“The guy who invented the hamburger was smart. But the guy who invented the cheeseburger… Genius. ” – Kenny

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Apr 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A businessman with a nose for finding gold uses his savings on a potential new deal when no one else is willing to back his endeavor

My Take on it – The one great thing I can state about this film is that Matthew McConaughey proves once again how great of an actor he is because of his ability to transform himself for just about any role.

Unfortunately, the storyline and plot get a bit too technical too often and things that should be straight forward and simple in a film become difficult to grasp.

The motivations of all of the characters are quite simple to understand, but the film relies too heavily on a more concrete understanding of how the system works and the way things are explained just isn’t as clear cut and simple as they should be.

All of this together makes this film less enjoyable and merely a struggle to try and get through.

Bottom Line – McConaughey transforms himself in this film, but the storyline gets too technical and in some ways is a bit difficult to follow. I understood the motivations of many of the characters but too much of the story relies on understanding how the system works and the explanations given aren’t as simple and clear cut as they probably should be.  This, in turn makes the film more of a struggle to watch instead of being enjoyable.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Matthew McConaughey lost 47 lbs for Dallas Buyers Club (2013), but gained 45 pounds in this movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
