Mischief (1985)

“You may not be the biggest stud, Jonathan. But, at least you have a family. ” – Gene

Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Apr 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A coming of age film about a teen in the 1950’s who gets help from his new rebellious neighbor in order to get the girl if his dreams.

My Take on it – Certain films are made at the best point in time and this film definitely was meant to be made in the decade that we all know of as the 80’s.

The coming of age tale that is depicted here fits in with so many others films that were made during that decade and I have doubts as to whether it would have been possible to make such a film in any other decade.

This is a film that my good friend Dan from Slipthrough Movies has been trying to get me to watch for months if not two years already) and I just never had a real urge to watch it.

I’m so glad I finally did because this was such a fun film to watch and I felt so invested in what was going on with the characters.

Each of the cast members and characters they portray are fun to watch and despite each and every one of them being a typical movie stereotype, they all were quite easy to identify with.

I’m actually baffled that I somehow missed this film when it came out 32 years ago.

The teenager in me from the 80’s would’ve definitely loved it then even more than the 40 something in me did now.

So glad I finally got around to seeing this film and it is now part of my list of great coming of age films from the 80’s.

Bottom Line – Definitely a very 80’s film and I’m not sure it could have been made in any other decade.  The cast and characters are fun to watch because despite being very stereotypical, they are all easy to identify with. Not really sure how this film got by me during my teenage years and as much as I enjoyed it now, I’m sure I would have loved it even more had I seen it 30+ years ago.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Screenwriter Noel Black has said this movie is “somewhat autobiographical”.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. Yes! So glad you got the chance to watch this, Rob… and you liked it?! Even better.

The characters snuck up on me too. I was impressed by this little sex comedy set in the 50s. And you’re right… It’s So 80s! I love it.

It also didn’t hurt that Kelly Preston was a true sight to behold. I’m sure that scene made a few teens back in the day wear out their VHS and have to adjust the tracking 😉 But the movie is actually more than just a sex comedy. It was a coming-of-age story that worked for me too.

    Good review, buddy.

    • Not exactly sure I understand the multiple comments about this being a fifties film that could only have been made in the 80s – but do agree that it was a cut above similarly themed films made at any time. And very glad that SLIP/THROUGH-DAN said what he did about the future (and present) Mrs. Travolta – Kelly Preston – because if he hadn’t mentioned it – I would have. That scene was nicely handled and certainly got my attention when I saw the movie in the theater – and has stayed tucked away in the recesses of my memory ever since. I guess it’s a guy thing.
