Genre Guesstimation – Ghost in the Shell (1995)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Vern of the Video Vortex. We will be reviewing our favorite Graphic Novels that have been adapted for the screen.

The one caveat is that it has to be based on a book that has been published.

Example The Killing Joke would be acceptable because it’s based on an actual graphic novel.  The Dark Knight would not because it’s based on characters and there was no book before the movie.

Here is what appears to be the official/unofficial list of film adaptations of Graphic Novels

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of May by sending them to Vernsworld@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Vern!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Graphic Novels that have been adapted for the screen.

“If a technological feat is possible, man will do it. Almost as if it’s wired into the core of our being. ” – Major Kusanagi

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 May 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A cyborg policewoman works with her partner to find a dangerous hacker.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have had on my radar for quite a while but since I’m not the biggest fan of anime, I pushed it off over and over.

Surprisingly, I quite enjoyed this film despite that mainly because the characters and storyline were very interesting and thrilling to watch as things unfolded.

The ideas that they present here are even more relavant today than they were twenty years ago and with the advancement and knowledge about technology it rings much truer now than ever.

We all know how powerful, useful and dangerous technology can be and this film shows what can happen if things get out of hand.

Bottom Line – Not being a fan of anime, I really enjoyed this film mainly because the story and characters were quite interesting to follow. The ideas used two decades ago ring even truer today where more people have a better idea of what technology is all about and how powerful, useful and dangerous it can be. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – First anime film to be released at the same time in Japan, Britain, and the United States. Its intended goal was to bring anime to a more mainstream audience in the UK and the US. It didn’t, but it did become a sleeper hit on video and DVD. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes close.  The story is quite good, but  can’t see myself wanting to watch this over and over.

Rating – Globe Worthy
