Forced Movies 2017 #13 – The Grand Seduction (2013)

“Enjoy our beautiful harbour. ” – Murray

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 May 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A small Canadian town decides to try and lure a doctor to their quaint village by doing all they can to convince him to stay there in order for them to land a large factory contract.

My Take on it – This is another fun film that was chosen for me that I had never even heard of beforehand.

The premise is quite good and they do it in a way where you begin to root for both sides to get what they want even as things begin to slowly unravel and get out of control.

I liked the way that they have the townspeople portrayed because we get to feel the camaraderie between them all despite the fact that they all must do things they normally wouldn’t do in order to try and save their village.

The characters and the atmosphere of it all is done really well because they are all done in a very laid back kind of portrayal which seems to help them all move forward in their quest to ultimately try and gain the survival of their town’s livelihood.

The cats are mostly unknowns which works to the advantage of trying to sell the idea of a small town filled with “normal” people instead of one overflowing with familiar and famous faces.

Brendan Gleeson is always great and is especially good here as the leader of the whole “movement” to save the town.

Bottom Line – Really enjoyed the premise of this film because it makes you feel for both sides as things continue to get out of control.  The townspeople are presented in a great fashion and we feel a camaraderie with them despite the lengths they are willing to go for their town’s survival and livelihood.  Really liked the way that the characters and atmosphere were very laid back despite the fact that the eventual payoff  of it all for everyone was so pivotal for their survival. Great cast mostly of unknowns helps make this feel even more realistic. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Of the three leads, Gordon Pinsent is the only one who actually hails from Newfoundland. Mark Critch is also from Newfoundland. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
