Number of Times Seen – 3 Times (Theater in ’91, Cable in the 90’s and 21 May 2017)
Brief Synopsis – After the loss of his co-pilot, a Bomber pilot during The Vietnam War decides to find a way to hurt the enemy.
My Take on it – This is a film that I saw years ago and had pleasant memories of the film based on the action and love story .
Unfortunately, those memories really deceived me.
This film was actually quite boring the whole way through because the characters just aren’t developed well enough for us to care about them.
The battle scenes are quite mediocre and the attempt to make this film a Top Gun (1986) for the 90’s doesn’t work either since the aerial scenes just aren’;t that impressive.
The cast is quite well known (Willem Defoe, Danny Glover, Rosanna Arquette and even Brad Johnson) and they all disappoint in their attempt to propel this story high into the stratosphere.
All in all, this film just doesn’t do enough to make us feel thrilled by everything that happens like it should.
Bottom Line – Pretty mediocre war film that doesn’t really give us many sympathetic characters. The cast is quite prolific yet none of them really manage to do much to help propel the story into the stratosphere. The aerial scenes are no match for a film like Top Gun (1986) and this just feels like a lesser version trying to showcase fighter pilots..
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The song that Jake “Cool Hand” Grafton (Brad Johnson) and Virgil Cole (Willem Dafoe) gleefully sing in their A-6 Intruder after their successful bomb run on Hanoi is the 1964 hit Downtown made popular by British pop singer Petula Clark. During the Vietnam War going “Downtown” was military slang for bombing Hanoi. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
