“The car of tomorrow… today” – Preston Tucker

Brief Synopsis – Biopic of a visionary car maker who had to fight the industry in order to try to realize his dreams.
My Take on it –This is a film that I recall really enjoying as a kid and it was probably one of the first biopics that I had seen about someone not very famous.
I always remembered Jeff Bridges’ performance here and have been meaning for quite some time to rewatch it, but only now got around to it.
Nowadays, there aren’t many monopolies that still rule various industries, but at the time that this film is depicting, there were three major car companies and they did all they can to keep their monopoly tight.
The idea of weaving politics into monopolies is also not a new idea and this film is able to show how both together were used to try and effectively stop an independent car maker like Tucker from succeeding.
Jeff Bridges is perfect as the lead here and does a wonderful job making us care so much for his character’s visionary ideas.
It’s so easy to see how much love was put into making this film and it’s no surprise that both Director Francis Ford Coppola and Producer George Lucas both own Tucker cars (see Trivia below) and were so passionate in getting this story told.
The supporting cast is superb with Joan Allen, Christian Slater, Martin Landau, Lloyd Bridges, Dean Stockwell, Marshall Bell, Jay O. Sanders, Elias Koteas, Fredrick Forrest and Mako all giving great performances here.
Bottom Line – Bridges is great as the lead and he gives us so much reason to cheer for his character’s ambitious ideas. They present the politics and monopoly of the early car industry quite well. The fact that Director Coppola and Producer Lucas were fans of Tucker’s vision helps make this film seem as if it was made with so much love. Loved seeing so many great actors in supporting roles. Recommended!

Great film. Also the start of the renaissance of Martin Landau’s career, which eventually led to an Oscar win for “Ed Wood.” This was the film where he stopped being remembered as the guy from that Hitchcock film who was in Space 1999.
