Number of Times Seen – Twice (Cable in the 90’s and 11 Jun 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A cartoonist tries to find true love in New York.
My Take on it – This is a film with a very interesting premise but the choice to cast Gene Wilder as a thirty something year old (maybe even 40 something when he was nearly 60), hampers the effectiveness of it all.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved Wilder, but he just seems too out of his league in this film playing opposite Christine Lahti and Mary Stuart Masterson.
I’m not sure if it was the age differences but he just didn’t have the right energy or chemistry to work with these women.
I have always had a HUGE teenage crush on Masterson, so it was great seeing her here, but I just didn’t like the way that she and Wilder just seemed to have no real chemistry in their scenes together.
The themes that deal with parenthood, infertility and medical procedures is done well here because we get to see the lighter side of it all yet at the same time see the stress it can cause on the couple trying to find a way to bring a new life into the world.
The biggest problem with this film tho is the fact that something seems missing from the plot and when editing the film, apparently some important scenes landed on the cutting room floor that make certain scenes feel scraped together too quickly.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea for a film but Wilder comes across here as being too old for the role which takes away more than slightly from the impact of such a story. Liked the way they deal with the idea of infertility and how couples have quite a difficult time emotionally while trying to add a new life to their lives. Parts of the storyline feel a bit incomplete and rushed which makes one feel that something is clearly missing that was left on the cutting room floor.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – First movie that Gene Wilder appeared in without writing or co-writing for eight years, the last had been Hanky Panky (1982). (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
