Gross Anatomy (1989)

“[to his family after reading a letter from a med school] What? What’s the matter? You never seen a medical student before?” – Joe

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 Times (cable in the 80’s and 90’s and 12 Jun 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A rebellious first year medical student tries to get by with his wit, charm and intelligence despite not being able to conform to the normal methods of the school.

My Take on it – This is really a mediocre medical school film that just isn’t able to be as impactful as it probably should be.

We are given a group of characters who are all entirely stereotypical and superficial and lack real depth.

They all lack a real understanding on a much deeper level and therefore we don’t really care about what will happen to any of them.

This film came out nearly 28 years ago and since then, TV and movies have given us all a much better  and more thorough understanding of how difficult a life it can be for medical students and perhaps that is partially why this film feels even more mediocre than it probably did when it originally came out.

The cast seem to be going thru the motions here and really lack any chemistry between them which takes away from any real impact that this story or characters can have on us.

Bottom Line – Mediocre medical school drama that just isn’t able to be as impactful as it could be. The characters are all stereotypical and superficial and we don’t get to really understand any of them on a deeper level.  In the 28 years since this film came out, there have been enough TV shows and movies that have presented the difficulties of medical school and the medical profession as a whole in a much better and more thorough way.  The cast all lack real chemistry together which also takes away from any impact that this story can have.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – J.C. Quinn, who plays Papa Slovak (Joe’s Father), also starred with Matthew Modine in the movie “Vision Quest”, as the cook (Elmo) in the Hotel where Louden (Modine) worked. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
