All of Me (1984)

“Just because my grandfather didn’t rape the environment and exploit the workers doesn’t make me a peasant. And it’s not that he didn’t want to rape the environment and exploit the workers, I’m sure he did. It’s just that as a barber, he didn’t have that much opportunity. ” – Roger

Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (Cable in the 80’s and 90’s and 13 Jun 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A lawyer is possessed by a recently deceased heiress and must help her return to the young female body that she was promised.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve seen numerous times over the past few decades and always have enjoyed it because it is such a fun concept that works on numerous levels.

Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin were both perfectly cast for these roles and it’s so much fun watching them because it seems as if they too are having a fun time making this story work.

Martin is especially funny here because due to his history with very physical humor, he is perfectly able to make it seem as if his body is being possessed by two different people.

His ability to have both legs go different directions at once is so fun to watch.

The story itself has a wacky supernatural twist to it all, yet it still remains so enjoyable to see how things move along.

The gender bender aspects of the film make it even funnier than it normally would be and some fo the conversations between the characters (usually via a mirror) are truly classic to watch.

It seems to me at least that Martin and Tomlin had such a great time making this film work and the resulting efforts are extremely fun to watch happen.

Bottom Line – Martin and Tomlin are amazing together here. Martin’s history as a physical comedian works to his advantage here because the idea of him needing to pretend that two people are controlling his body at once is superbly acted out.  The story is a bit wacky but it still works really well and is quite humorous especially because of the gender bender aspects of the story. which Tomlin and Martin make so much fun for us to watch it all happen. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Lily Tomlin was born the day World War II started. Steve Martin was born the day World War II ended. (From IMDB)
