The Spanish Prisoner (1997)

“Worry is like interest paid in advance on a debt that never comes due. ” – George Lang

Number of Times Seen – 2 (Video in ’98 and 15 Jun 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A businessman meets a millionaire while on a trip in the Bahamas which changes the way he looks at his life and career.

My Take on it – This is a very clever film that is filled with classic David Mamet words.

The characters are all so intelligent created and each and every thing that they say is perfectly calculated for us to appreciate everything that happens.

The story is like a spiral staircase where things keep going in different directions and we never really know what direction things will be taking.

It’s extremely easy to get engrossed in the story because we are constantly trying to figure out how to decipher everything that is happening in front of us.

Campbell Scott is a great choice as the lead character and we can really feel the dilemma that he faces and want to somehow help him extract himself from it.

Steve Martin steals every scene he is in because his character is so different from what we have come to expect from him and he is perfect here.

The film’s story has so many twists and turns and it’;s so much fun watching it all play out in front of us.

A word to the wise here, try not to read much about this film before watching it because it will lose some of its impact if you know too much going in the first time around.

Bottom Line – Cleverly written mystery by Mamet who really knows how to write a great story.  It’s so easy to stay engrossed in the whole story the entire time as we also try to decipher what is really happening.  Scott is the perfect lead for this film and Martin plays so well against type and was truly the perfect choice for his role.  Loved the twist and turns the whole way through because it is put together so well. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film’s title is a reference to one of the oldest con tricks in the book.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
