De Palma (2015)

“Holy mackerel.” – Brian De Palma

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jul 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Award winning Director De Palma is interviewed about his life’s work and tells us everything as it truly is instead of how it should be.

My Take on it – This film is a true breath of fresh air because it gives us a rare perspective on movie making that is hardly not disclosed.

We all know that there are problems within the film making industry, but this time we get a no nonsense view of it all because Director Brian De Palma shows that he is well beyond the point where he cares what people think about what he says.

The way that he recounts the story of his career is great to hear and we get so many interesting anecdotes about each and every one of his films and what he needed to do in order to try and get them made the way he wanted.

LOve dthe way he described each and every story with the same passion and it didn’t matter whether it was a fight he won or lost along the way.

The pacing is great and doesn’t feel rushed at all and we can easily go on listening to De Palma’s stories for even longer than the near two hours of this film.

De Palm’s goal here is to help us get a much better understanding of how things really work in Hollywood instead of how they probably should work.

Bottom Line – Great to see a film maker who is in his twilight years and has no fear to tell the true stories of how his career progressed.  Nothing feels rushed and he tells us lots of great anecdotes about his ups and downs in the industry. It’s too bad that there aren’t more film makers like him who are willing to say whatever they want in order to help us understand how things really work instead of how we think things should work within the industry. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Paltrow and Baumbach filmed Brian De Palma for one week in 2010, collecting about 30 hours worth of interview footage. De Palma, sitting in Paltrow’s living room and talking about his career, wore the same shirt every day for continuity’s sake.(From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
