“Are you asking me to go back to the same lousy life I had ten years ago before I had this lousy life? ” – Sylvia
Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Jul 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A reporter for a Tabloid newspaper pretends to be his long suffering neighbor in order to get an exclusive interview with a popular female psychologist.
My Take on it – This is a film that seems to have been made in order to mainly shock the movie going audiences of the mid 1960’s.
The themes and dialogue are taken to the extremes allowed at the time yet still remain quite effective the whole way through.
What makes this film work so well though is the amazing on screen dynamics and chemistry of stars Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood.
They are both able to attract and deflect from one another gracefully when needed and this makes them such a great pair.
The chaos of the last third of the film is good yet it is dragged on for too much time which in the end just gets annoying and tiresome.
The chase scene is quite reminiscent of the kinds that go well with the genre and even the absurd aspects of it can elicit a chuckle, but I only wish they had made that section of the film a bit shorter because then it would have been even more effective.
Bottom Line – Story fits quite well into the whole chaos of the sexual revolution of the 60’s. This film goes to the limits with what it says and does but still gets its point across perfectly. Wood and Curtis are great together because they have the right kind of chemistry to both attract and deflect from one another gracefully when needed. The chase scene at the end follows in the footsteps of many final scene chases of movies of this genre but goes on for too long and loses its impact because it gets tiresomely drawn out. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Though his performance was one of the few that received praise, Henry Fonda later said that of all of the movies he’d made, he liked this one the least. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
