The Mummy (2017)

“Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters. ” – Dr. Jekyl

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Jul 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A special forces officer and a scientist discover the remains of a long lost Egyptian tomb in the deserts of Iraq.

My Take on it – This film was meant to launch a new cinematic series but if the intention is to make the rest on a comparable level to this film, they just shouldn’t waste their time.

The ide4a sounds interesting on paper but the exceution is terrible because they really aren’t sure where they wish to go with this idea.

Tom Cruise is blatantly miscast here and ruins much of the momentum of the action.

He was clearly cast due to his star status instead of because the role was perfect for him.

Russell Crowe, on the other hand works great in his role but he isn’t in enough scenes which is a shame.

The very beginning of this movie makes it seem as if it’s going in the right direction but quite quickly it loses any momentum that it had and literally crashes and burns.

The only scene really worth watching in this terrible film is the airplane scene (which apparently is predominantly featured in the trailer.)

I’m really not sure if I am interesting in seeing more of the Dark Universe but there definitely is potential as long as they don’t do things exactly like they did them here.

I guess, only time will tell…

Bottom Line – Interesting idea for the revival of this monster movie that fails miserably. Cruise is totally miscast here yet I have no doubt that he was chosen for his star status instead of because he fit the role. Crowe is great in the few scenes he’s in, but is sorely underused. This film starts off well but loses all of its momentum within minutes. The plane scene is the only part that is truly memorable here.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The zero gravity scene took sixty-four takes and was shot for two days in a falling plane. Reportedly, a lot of the crew got nauseous during the scene and vomited, except for the main stars, Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis, who were really proud of the stunt. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
