Number of Times Seen – 2 (TV in ’88 and 12 Jul 2017)
Brief Synopsis – Major Wright is once again given a mission where he must lead twelve convicted criminals against the Nazis but this time they have a traitor in their midst.
My Take on it – I must say that I am finally glad to have rewatched all 4 of the films in this series because it really proves that just because you have a formula that works the first time around doesn’t necessarily mean that it can easily be recycled with the same expected results.
You can’t fault them for trying but this film (along with the other two sequels before it), just doesn’t manage to thrill as much as the original did.
The characters here once again aren’t developed well enough and they once again recycle some of the dialogue used ion all of the previous attempts.
I did like the added twist here of having a traitor among the men but it wasn’t done well enough to make it work so well.
The publicity stunt to add a woman to the team doesn’t work very well and takes away even more from the way the story was told. Instead of enhancing the story it causes it to feel more like a joke which is quite unfortunate.
Bottom Line – Once again, this truly feels like a carbon copy of the previous three films. Liked the added twist of having one of the men be a mysterious traitor despite not really giving us much of a reason for this. Adding a woman as part of team feels more like a publicity move instead of working well to enhance the story. Glad they stopped trying to make these; three tries was more than enough to prove that the original can’t be recreated.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Lee Marvin died shortly before filming began, so his character was written out of the film. Telly Savalas was very ill with bladder cancer during filming. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
