Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Jul 2017)
Brief Synopsis – Explore/conservationist Dirk Pitt tries to help the government find the sunken Titanic in order to discover a missing Chemical element that was last seen aboard that fated ship.
My Take on it – I’ve read a number of Clive Cussler’s novels and due to the way his stories are written, I always knew that they wouldn’t adapt too easily to the screen.
This is yet another example of that truth.
The story itself is quite good and is overall interesting yet something constantly feels missing when watching the story unfold on screen.
Casting Richrad Jordan as the lead was actually a great choice because he does it so well and it definitely makes the choice of Matthew McConaughey decades later in Sahara (2005) seem like a major blunder because Jordan knows how to play the character correctly while MM just wanted to make the character into an action hero.
Being a HUGE fan of the movie Titanic (1997), the parts of this film dealing with the ship seem extremely comical when trying to compare the two versions of it.
Bottom Line – Interesting story that probably worked much better on paper (like most Cussler novels should) as opposed to on screen. Cussler’s story are also quite complex and fun to read and they just don’t translate very well to the screen because too much feels missing. I actually liked the casting of Jordan in the lead role and was a better choice than McConaughey in Sahara (2005). Having seen Titanic (1997) lots and lots of times, watching the parts related to the ship seem somewhat comical in comparison.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was surprisingly accurate on one point – even though they didn’t know it yet. Computer displays in the movie show the Titanic resting at a depth of 12,347 feet. The actual Titanic came to a rest at 12,415 feet. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
