Brief Synopsis – In a futuristic world, the nations of the world must unite against a threat caused by a wormhole in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that allows alien creatures to attack the inhabitants of our world.
My Take on it – This is the second film that I decided to watch based solely on Zenger’s suggestion after having listened to his Zeng This! podcast last week which featured the Down the Hall Guys Rodney and Chet who joined Zenger and Ellie for a show about the best Sci-Fi War movies.
I saw this film a few years back and enjoyed it but apparently didn’t immerse myself into it enough.
On this re-watch, I was completely blown away with how much fun this film was.
Director Guillermo del Toro really knows how to keep things thrilling from start to end and I was hooked the entire time.
The use of special effects for the alien creatures, the defenders and the battles is done nearly seamlessly and it all seems so realistic looking and somewhat plausible especially based on the technologies that we have today.
Once again GDT was able to take his vision of a tale and by using the perfect balance of effects and story helps us feel a connection to his characters and the world they are part of.
The fact that the action is superb doesn’t hurt either!
He is one of the most visionary directors around today and this film is a perfect example of why.
I’m now quite excited to see the sequel to this film slated for next year because it is suppose to continue GDT’s vision of this world united in order to stop a common threat from the unknown.
Thanks again to Zenger and Ellie for getting me to rewatch this film!
They really know what they are talking about!
(I think I’m gonna have to rethink my own Sci-Fi/Fantasy war top ten because the one I presented to them was a mess.)
Bottom Line – Amazing film that really keeps things thrilling the whole time. The use of special effects for the creatures, the defenders and the battles are amazingly put together and it all looks amazing. They do an excellent job making it all seem realistic and plausible given our current technology. Appreciated this much more this time that the last time and it was enjoyable from start to finish. del Toro is a superb director and knows how to give us a perfect blend of story and effects to tell us the tale he has envisioned for us. Highly Recommended
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Travis Beacham, the screenwriter, got the idea for the movie while walking along the California coastline on a foggy morning. The shape of the pier looked like a creature rising from the water, and he imagined a large robot waiting on the shore to battle it. (From IMDB)
