The Man with Two Brains (1983)

Ladies and gentlemen, I can envision a day when the brains of brilliant men can be kept alive in the bodies of dumb people” – Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Aug 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A brilliant brain surgeon meets a beautiful yet dangerous woman and falls in love with her.  Following their wedding, he falls in love with the talking brain of another woman and then his real problems begin.

My Take on it – I’ve always been a big fan of Steve Martin’s comedy and his hilarious performances in many of his movies.

This is one that I never had the chance to see before now and was excited to seeing another funny collaboration between Martin and Carl Reiner.

Unfortunately, this movie just isn’t funny at all and the way that things are presented drag on instead of being witty and sharp like a good comedy should be.

Kathleeen Turner is good here in a role very different from what we usually see her in, but the biggest problem is the chemistry between her character and Martin and Martin’s with the talking brain voiced by Spacek.

This is a one joke film that just can’t make things stay interesting enough for it’s 90 minute runtime.

I think my biggest problem was that my expectations were way too high for this film.

At least, Martin was able to hit his stride with some great roles over the next decade after this film came out.

I suggest you watch some of his better films and skip this one.  Check pout Roxanne (1987), Parenthood (1989) or Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) for some great laughs.

Bottom Line – Not as funny as I would have hoped since it was the brainchild of Martin and Reiner.  Turner is good here but Martin’s zany character is good by himself but lacks real chemistry with her or the Spacek voiced brain. Apparently, my expectations were way too high for this film. Skip it.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Steve Martin gets the bottle of window cleaner from the trunk of the car, the brand name is listed on the bottle, too small and too briefly to be seen without pausing the film. If you pause it, you can see that the label says “Pane in the Glass” window cleaner. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
