Number of Times Seen – at least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s and 90’s, video, DVD and 15 Aug 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A down on his luck flower shop worker finds an exotic plant who’s insatiable taste for blood might help him realize his dream.
My Take on it – This is a very unconventional musical yet it works almost the whole time despite its very morbid look at things.
Rick Moranis was the perfect choice for the lead here and this is one of his best roles ever.
He is helped along by an amazing supporting cast led by Ellen Green, Steve Martin, Bill Murray and Vincent Gardenia.
The version I watched was the Directors Cut which restored the original morbid ending.
I liked the way they did it, but I still prefer to watch the theatrical version because of it’s added themes of hope and love that are excised from this version.
This film has some great songs.
Here are two of my favorites:
Bottom Line – Great musical that works on so many levels despite it’s morbid look at things. Moranis is perfect in the title role and is helped by such an amazing supporting cast. I understand why they restored the original ending, but I’m still a fan of the theatrical ending. Amazing songs especially Downtown and Mean Green Mother. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space” (written for this film) is the first Oscar-nominated song to contain profanity. As a result, the song was edited, replacing the more risqué lyrics with lyrics cut from the final film (though included on the film soundtrack). (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
