“You know what a Rainmaker is, kid? The bucks are gonna be falling from the sky.” – Deck
Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Theater in ’97, video, cable, DVD, 1 Aug 2006 and 29 Aug 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A young Law school graduate gets his first real big case when he must sue an insurance company on behalf of a poor family who’s son is dying of Cancer.
My Take on it – I have always been a fan of John Grisham’s novels and the adaptation of his works to the screen.
This is probably my favorite of them all (so far) because it stays extremely close to the source material almost the entire time.
The choice of baby faced Matt Damon as the lead was a great one because he fits the role so well of a young, just out of law school ambitious young lawyer.
He is helped along by an amazing suupporting cast which includes, John Voight, Danny Devito, Mickey Rourke, Virginia Madsen, Dean Stockwell, Danny Glover, Roy Scheider, Claire Dames and Teresa Wright.
The story itself moves along at a great pace and stays both compelling and gripping the entire time as we are drawn deeper and deeper into the storyline.
The premise is extremely relateable to most people which helps keep us interested the whole way through.
As with most Grisham stories, we constantly are bombarded with lots of twists and turns along the way that help keep things thrilling and more importantly entertaining.
Bottom Line – One of the very best Grisham adaptations. Damon is great in this lead role. The supporting cast is superb in helping him along the way. The story itself is quite compelling and is extremely gripping since it revolves around a premise that most people can easily relate to. As usual with Grisham’s tales, the twists and turns are always extremely fun to watch unfold. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Curious to understand the appeal of John Grisham’s work, Francis Ford Coppola picked up a copy of the book at the airport. He ended up finishing it on the flight, impressed with its ability to hold his attention so thoroughly. He decided to make the film adaptation of the book his next project. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy
