Number of Times Seen – 2 (11 Dec 2009 and 3 Sep 2017)
Brief Synopsis – After a young couple return from their honeymoon and real life begins, they must figure out how to juggle everything while keeping their budding marriage together.
My Take on it – I have always been a fan of Neil Simon’s work but his genius is most perceived tthrough his amazing dialogue.
This film works so well due to the rapid fire dialogue and this helps make the situations feel so real and genuine the whole time.
Robert Redford and Jane Fonda have amazing chemistry together and they do a wonderful job showing how two people with such diverse personalities can have a strong connection yet still find enough reasons to squabble.
This story is a firm and refreshing reminder to us all of the feeling of young marital love prior to discovering the more complex aspects of family life.
The characters worries seem to them to be global issues when in reality we can see that they are simply inconsequential within the greater scheme of things but their belief is what makes it all feel so real.
Bottom Line – Simon’s amazing dialogue shines here. The snappy discussions between the characters feel so real and spontaneous that you can easily imagine it all being genuine. Redford and Fonda have great chemistry together and it’s nice to see how easily two diverse character personalities can connect so well yet also sqabble. A great reminder of young marital love before things in life get more complicated. The worries of the characters are minimal in the large scope but for them they are immense. Recomnended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Robert Redford loathed wearing a suit and tie all day which was required for his character. During breaks between filming, Redford wore western boots and a black cowboy hat. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
