Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times if not more (and 3 Sep 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A infamous pirate seeks his buried treasure after serving twenty years in prison, but he must avoid other treasure hunters who want the treasure as well.
My Take on it – I saw this film so many times on cable in the 80’s and despite realizing how silly the plot is, it’s still really enjoyable to watch because it is so funny.
Graham Chapman tried making this film for years and when he finally got it made, everyone knew how bad it would be, but they apparently had such a great time making it.
The ideas presented here are so over the top that it’s not hard to laugh at it despite the fact that it’s blatantly stupid.
The cast is superb and they really help make this even more fun to watch.
The real winner here tho is the witty dialogue and the clever jokes which definitely makes this film worth watching at least once.
Eventhough I hadn’t seen this in more than 20 years, I remembered much of it and still laughed even at the parts which I knew were coming.
Bottom Line – Hilarious yet extremely silly film. Chapman makes this idea so over the top that the viewer will laugh at the stupidity of it all despite realizing how bad it truly is. Amazing cast helps this film feel even better but it’s the clever jokes and dialogue that make this worth watching at least once.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Eric Idle said that this is one of the worst films he’d ever done, but later said “the best times can be on the worst movies and vice versa, e.g., Yellowbeard, which I wouldn’t have missed for the world”. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
