Number of Times Seen – 2 (Cable in the 90’s and 12 Sep 2017)
Brief Synopsis – Three brothers living in New York deal with life, love, religion and what it means to be in a relationship
My Take on it – Edward Burns burst onto the scene with this film about three brothers who are quite different yet all seem to still form a strong bond despite it all.
This was Burns’ directorial and screenwriting debut and he really hit one out of the park here because the characters and situations presented feel so genuine and familiar to us all.
The dialogue is superbly written and it all seems so natural.
Each of the characters have a distinct voice which helps them all feel unique and real.
This film went on to win Best Picture at Sundance that year and proved that it’s possible to make a tender and meaningful kind of film on such a low budget.
The bond between the three brothers is done quite well and we get to see how events of their shared past(s), present(s) and future(s) help bring them together even closer especially during the many ups and downs that life throws at us all.
Not his best film, but his most impactful.
Bottom Line – Great directorial and script-writing debut of Burns who shows that it’s possible to make such a tender and meaningful film with a very low budget. The dialogue between the characters is superb and each one has their own clear and distinct voice. Loved the way that they show how it’s possible for three brothers who grew up together to be completely different when it comes to just about any issue they must deal with. Their bond is what keeps them together tho through the ups and downs of life that the past, present and even future throw at them. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Edward Burns gave Robert Redford a tape of this film in a NYC elevator and begged him to watch it. Redford said that Burns looked like a panhandler. “I get that all the time, but I thought, what the hell, that’s what it’s all about.” He watched it, liked it, and the film went on to win at Sundance. Rating – Globe Worthy
