Reality Bites (1994)

“[On answering machine] At the beep, please leave your name, number, and a brief justification for the ontological necessity of modern man’s existential dilemma, and we’ll get back to you” – Troy

Number of Times Seen – 2 (Cable in the 90’s and 13 Sep 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A group of recent college graduates try to figure out how to navigate life once the enter the “real world” mostly dealing with their work and love issues.

My Take on it – This is a great example of a film that worked better when it was made than how it is perceived two decades later.

The plights of the members of Generation X in the mid 90’s just doesn’t translate well enough to viewing now and it feels extremely dated.

The cast is quite good here but they don’t really have enough to do with is quite unfortunate since some of them are extremely talented.

We would expect more from Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke,  Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Ben Stiller (who also directed this film)

The best part if watching this film now us the soundtrack which is amazing.

My favorite is by far the re-made version of Baby I Love Your Way by Big Moutain. I recall watching the video for the song so much at the time because it was so inspiring to listen to.

Check it out here:

Bottom Line – Probably was more impactful when it came out because it really epitomizes the struggles of the members of Generation X as they began to enter the real world. Watching it today, it just doesn’t work as well as it should and feels too dated. Excellent cast that just don’t have enough to really do here which is quite unfortunate. The soundtrack is superb tho especially the remaking of Baby I love your way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The scene in which Michael and Lelaina discuss the Big Gulp on the back of Michael’s car was originally supposed to have the song “Beth” by ‘KISS’ playing. Ben Stiller couldn’t secure the rights to the song so they opted for “Baby I Love Your Way” by Peter Frampton instead. Peter Frampton was an upstairs neighbor of Ben Stiller during filming of the movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
